Platanos, Samos Island |
The village of Platanos is situated southern to the road leading to Aghioi Theodori, at a distance of 3 kilometers, and 10 kilometers southeastern to Karlovasi. It is a lovely village, chocked with woods and vineyards and it obviously owes its name to the huge plane trees grown at the square. The view to the South and West is fascinating. One of the most impressive features is the imposing mountain of Kerkis, with the villages scrambled over the mountainside. The view to the Southwest is open and you will see the southwestern coast of Samos, along with the islands of Fourni and some of the islands of the Dodecanese complex, in the distance. |

Platanos is an old village, settled in early 17th century, by settlers who came from the island of Euboea. The residents live on agriculture, mainly on viniculture. The best place of Platanos is certainly the wide central square with the huge plane trees shading it, the traditional cafés and the taverns with local dishes. From the village, the road continues up to the circular main road connecting Karlovasi with Pythagorio and the town of Samos; it is a difficult road with successive sharp bends. |

In case of health problems, you should return to the nearby town of Karlovasi (some 10 kilometers far away to the Northwest), where you will find a local Medical Center and a pharmacy. Access to the village from Karlovasi is easy by taxi; you may also reach the place by rented or private car and motorbikes. Platanos is found some 40 kilometers far from the town of Samos. |
