The archaeological site of Ireon is situated some 3 km. west of Pythagorioand and it is the most famous archaeological site of Samos and one of the most important of Greece. It is dedicated to the goddess Hera and the first surveys have been undertaken at 1702 by the French doctor and botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort.
