Monastery of Megali Panagia, Samos |
The Monastery of Megali Panagia (“Virgin Mary, the Great” in Greek) is situated at a distance of some two kilometers southeastern to Koumaradaeoi, close to the way leading to Myloi. The monastery is found within an area of breathtaking beauty, at an altitude of more than 200 meters. The view from the monastery is fascinating: from there one can see the plain of Chora, the town of Pythagorio and the mountain Mykali at the opposite coast of Asia Minor. |

It has been founded in 1586 by two brothers, the monks Nilos and Dionysios and it is dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. The church has a nice wood-carved icon screen, several frescoes and a collection of religious objects. Access to the monastery is easy from Pythagorio via Pyrgos, by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
