Sarakinis’ Tower, Samos |
Nicolaos Sarakinis was a bar pilot in the fleet of the Ottoman admiral Kilitz Ali Pasha and had helped his master to repopulate Samos in late 16th century. In return to his contribution Kilitz Ali Pasha gave Sarakinis large estates in the area of Heraeon. Due to the hard conditions of the period and the frequent pirates’ raids, Sarakinis decided to build a fortified tower to protect himself. The construction finished in circa 1577. |

The imposing tower is a three-storeyed rectangular building, with bastions and strong fortification. This character is evidenced not only in the architecture of the tower, but above all in the way the building has been arranged. Today it is a property of the Holy Monastery of Patmos. The tower is situated at a distance of some 8 kilometers western to Pythagorio, close enough to the archaeological site of Heraeon. Access to the tower is pretty easy by taxi and by private means. |
