Vrontas Monastery, Samos |
The Vrontas Monastery or Panaghia Vrontiani is situated southern to the village of Vourliotes, just a couple of kilometers far from it. It is found within a dreamy overgrown place, at an altitude of 450 meters; the view from there is fascinating: you may see both the eastern and northern coast of Samos and the coast of Asia Minor in the distance. The monastery was founded in 1566 by two brothers, the monks Iakovos and Makarios, and it is dedicated to the Birth of Virgin Mary. |

The church had a lot of frescoes, a valuable wood carved icon screen and numerous religious objects of high artistic and religious value; unfortunately, the fires of 1999 had destroyed almost everything. Today, a great task has been undertaken to restore the monastery to its previous splendor. Access to the monastery from the town of Samos or from Karlovasi is easy by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
