Spatharei, Samos Island |
The village of Spatharaeoi is found at a distance of some 5 kilometers far from Pyrgos, on the way to the village of Pagondas, at the mountainside of mountain Bournias. It is one of the villages built on the higher altitude in Samos. It owes its name to a priest named Petros Spathas who was the first settler; it is him and the 18 children he had, that formed this village. The residents live on agriculture, the most important cultivation being that of olive trees. Both the village and the cultivations suffered extended damages during the fires of the recent years. |

The village offers a breathtaking view: from here you may see the coast of Marathokambos, the imposing mountain Kerkis, but also some of the islands of the Dodecanese complex, as well as the islands of Fournoi and Ikaria in the distance. Several coastal settlements, more recently founded, belong to Spatharaeoi: Zefyros, Apostolos Pavlos, Vergi, Kalogeriko, Kyrgiani, Limnionaki, Metohi and Sykia; the islet of Samiopoula is also part of the territory of the village. The population of all of them do not exceed 170 people. In case of emergence, the pharmacy and the local Medical Center of Pyrgos (some 5 kilometers northern to Spatharaeoi) are available for you. Access to the village is possible from Pyrgos, by rented or private car and motorbikes. |
