Sightseeing in Samos Town (Vathi) |
Both the town and the broader area offer a lot of sightseeing, which make the town a pole of attraction especially in summer. Among the churches worth visiting are: the church of Aghios Spyridonas, where on the 11th of November 1912 it had been declared the incorporation of Samos to the Greek state, the Cathedral of Aghios Nicolaos (St. Nicolas), the church of Ae Giannakis (St. John) at Ano Vathy, a church with a very special architecture, the church of Aghia Irini (St. Irene) and the three churches above Vathy. At a distance of 7 kilometers northeastern to the town you may see the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pighi (Virgin, the Spring of Life) built in the 18th century, with the monument in honor of the young people who died in the battles against the conquerors in 1943. At a distance of 5 kilometers eastern to the town it is situated the Holy Monastery of Aghia Zoni, built in the 17th century; there it is worth seeing the frescoes and the elaborated wood carved icon screen. |

Don’t miss to see the Town Hall where it had once been housed the Parliament of Samos and now, apart of the Town Hall, it is also housed the Municipal Gallery with several historic souvenirs of the recent history of the island. Among those we should mention the Constitution of the State of Samos, several portraits of governors and other important persons of the political, economic and social life of the island and several documents of the local history. Don’t miss to visit the Paschalion Archaeophylakion, which used to be the museum of the town in the past; also it is worth seeing the Public Library with great collections of prints and books of high historic value. At Pythagoras square you may see the excellent sculpture representing a Lion. You may also see the nice, restored buildings of the National and Commercial Banks, the statue of Themistoklis Sofoulis at the waterfront and the buildings of the old Tobacco Storehouses. And of course, don’t miss to stroll around the settlement of Palio (“old”) Vathy, with the traditional architecture and a nice view of the port. |
