Located at one of the most privileged spots in the city of Hania, Kriti Hotel is really in the centre of attention.
It is only 50 metres away from the cosmopolitan beach of Koum Kapi, where you will come across many cafeterias, bars, restaurants and taverns. Koum Kapi is definitely the place to start your evening outings, to have your first drinks and to enjoy your dinner, surrendered to the sound of the waves and the sea breeze.
Equally near and at a mere distance of less than 200 metres lies the Old Venetian Harbour and the Old City of Hania. Wander around the narrow Venetian streets of the Old City and be carried away to another time. Here you will come across many little shops where you will find, admire and buy folk art items, gifts and memorabilia for you and your loved ones.
You may also stroll down the picturesque Old Venetian Harbour of Hania and see the famous Venetian Lighthouse that is overlooking the Harbour. The Firkas Fort at the entrance of the Harbour houses the Naval Museum with exhibits from the island’s naval history. In the streets of the harbour that is packed with people all year round you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or a refreshing cocktail or even have a meal in one of the numerous taverns and restaurants that offer both local and international cuisine. Then, continue your walk and see some of the city’s most important sights such as the Megalo Arsenali (Great Shipyard), the Neoria (Shipyards) and the Yali Tzamisi Mosque. The Old Venetian Harbour is an ideal destination at night as it is at noon.
For culture or sports fans, Kriti Hotel is definitely the place to stay. The Eastern Moat Theatre is opposite the Hotel on its north side and the National Stadium of Hania is right on the next block on the south side of the hotel. Various cultural and athletic events are held there all year round and particularly in the summer. The National Stadium of Hania is also available for those of you who wish to go jogging in the morning, play football or basketball with your friends.
For those of you who wish to explore the rest of the island, the beaches and the sights, we can help you rent a car or a motorcycle. Kriti Hotel is located in the beautiful city of Hania, at an exceptionally privileged spot, right at the point where the city centre, the Old Venetian Harbour and the sea meet.
Below we cite some of the sights and the locations that we believe are worth visiting. Most of them, such as the Old Venetian Harbour, the Municipal Market, the National Stadium of Hania and the Eastern Moat Theatre are less than 500 metres away from our hotel.
Municipal Market:
Impressive because of its size and shape, the Municipal Market of Hania is built on the ruins of the Piatta Forma rampart. The construction study was concluded by K. Drandakis. It has a cruciform shape and houses 76 shops arranged in groups along the four arms of the cross. It is made out of quarried porous stone with an impressive south facade. The architectural features mainly refer to the local tradition developed during the Venetian Occupation. The construction was completed in 1913 and it was Eleftherios Venizelos, then Prime Minister, who inaugurated the Municipal Market on December 4th, 1913 during the celebrations for the union of Crete with Greece.
National Stadium of Hania
Location: Hania is located in the western part of Crete, where you may arrive either by boat from the Port of Piraeus or by plane. The National Stadium of Hania itself is near the city centre, at the southeastern angle of the Venetian Walls that surround the old city. It is only 5 minutes on foot from the Square 1866, one of the most central points in the city, to the stadium. It is almost impossible to miss it as the huge and characteristic floodlights of the stadium can be seen from almost every part of the city.
Old Venetian Harbour:
The Harbour was built for the first time between 1320 and 1356 by the Venetians who wanted to protect the city of Hania. The harbour suffered from north winds and the sedimentation of the harbour basin by rain and sewage waters. To deal with these problems, the Venetians built a harbour breakwater with an opening for the renewal of water. At the entrance of the port there is a lighthouse which was rebuilt during the Egyptian occupation in the form that is still today.
