Giouchtas
Sacred mountain for the Minoans (811m). A natural observation post with breathtaking views. Spring marks the flowering of 17 different species of orchid, and its flanks are used as nesting areas for the gyps fulvus vulture.

Small market town, worth noting for its different architectural styles – neoclassical, Cretan and Venetian, as well as its beautiful square.
Phaestos
Home to the mythical palace of Radamanthys, brother of King Minos.
Fodele
Birthplace of Domenico Theotokopoulos. The El Greco museum, nestling amongst groves of oranges and lemons.
Upper Hersonissos – Piskopiano - Koutouloufari
Τhree traditional settlements at the foot of Mount Harakas, with beautiful cobbled streets, stone houses and welcoming squares.
Potamies
Attractive village in the middle of the region of Hersonissos (the first of a series of little villages, Sfendili, Avdou, Gonies and Kera). A little festival is held outside the Church of the Virgin Mary in the summer.
Lychnostatis
Home to the open air Museum of Folklore, Cretan traditions and popular culture, a short distance from Hersonissos.
Heraklio
The capital city of the region of the same name. Evidence indicates that it dates back to the Neolithic Era. The port of Knossos. Capital city of the Aegean dominion in the 13th century, also known as Candia. Multifaceted, contradictory and full of life.

The place to go for Minoan culture and the most important collection of findings from the palaces at Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and Zakros.

Take a stroll down the road of illusions
The road through Heraklio (25th August) which links the square at the Venetian port with the Morosini fountain (17th century) and the Loggia (once used as a meeting place for Venetian noblemen, now housing the Town Council) in the lively heart of Heraklio.
The square at Aghia Katerina Sinaitis
For a precious sample of the Cretan School of Hagiography (15th-17th century), visit the collection at the Aghia Katerina monastery.
Wild herb only found in the craggy mountains of Crete. Located in areas extremely dangerous to access, only the most dedicated can manage to harvest it, hence the name erondas in Greek, from the Greek term eros, love. Delicious tisane for winter nights, with therapeutical properties, documented as far back as the 4th century in the texts of 24 different authors.

The year marking the start of the Great Cretan Revolution, and the name of the street where the open-air market is held in Heraklio. Colours and heady perfumes.
