ANAVATOS (distance from the Aepos: 30km)
North Chios differs greatly from the southern part in respect to physical environment and productivity. Housing communities are small and isolated, and always far from the sea. The houses were roughly built, and the only sign of the Genoese influence, aside from written sources, are the central towers in the villages.Anavatos, 16 Km from town, is an exception.The village of Anavatos is built on a conical cliff 450 meters above the sea, with steep sides to the south and west, and with only a single access to the north.The village was abandoned after the horrible slaughters of 1822 and in our days it is a national Monument for all the Chians and Greeks. Although Anavatos is deserted today, as most of the villages of northern Chios, a considerable number of houses still stand, as well as the wonderful "three storey" building where the olive press was housed, the School, the church of Taxiarchi and the Virgin Mary. The site is a unique picture of a ghost town in a wild, imaginative, impressive environment. One can get to Anavatos in 45 minutes following a wonderful road which connects Anavatos with the Town of Chios. There is also a climbing path in the forest which starts from "Provatas" mountain and leads to Anavatos.
AUGONYMA (distance from the Aepos: 27km)
In the central street central and western Chios, after you pass the Karie's, in your way to the westerners, in a distance 16 klm from the city of Chios, in a rocky hill exists the graphic village of Aygwnyma. The houses are built from Stone and the residents of village are very few. During the sunset, the view of Aegean seas and Psaras, the medieval place of observatory and the clean beach ElInta constitute unique patterns for the modern travellers Exist a unique forest with pines, which is also the more important forest of island. The particular forest includes the village Aygwnyma and Anavato or differently the Mystra of Chios.
VOLISSOS (distance from the Aepos: 40km)
Located about 40km. away from the capital of the island, Volissos has a long history. At Volissos, as to Thoukidedes, there was once an ancient Aeolic city, and the rumor that it was the birthplace of Homer is still a legend told. On the top of the hill was built a castle in the medieval times. The Byzantine castle has a trapezoid shape with six circular towers. Inside the castle there were several buildings, cisterns and churches. There was also a tunnel connecting the castle with the seashore and the Pithonas district.Volissos is the biggest village in NW Chios.Wind mills and the ruins of some water mills as well as a lot of Byzantine churches adorn the surrounding area. The main temple of the village is devoted to "The transfiguration of Christ" and is celebrated on the 6th of August, another church in the village devoted to Panaghia (Virgin Mary) and is celebrated on the 15th of August. In the local festivals on August 6th and 15th, the visitor can enjoy the musical and dancing tradition of the villages.
SAINT MARKELLA (distance from the Aepos: 45km)
In the Volisso in graphic beach is found the building group of holy Adoration of Saint Markellas. NEA MONI (distance from the Aepos: 25km)
Nea Moni is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Greece situated in Chios island .Dated from the 11th century. Nea Moni is the result of a fulfilment of a promise from Byzantine emperor Monomahos. He promised to the holy icon of Theotokos, he would build a monastery on the place the icon was found when he would become emperor. Two year after his promise he indeed became the Byzantine emperor and ordered his best architects and artists to build Nea Moni. The construction would take 12 year.Unfortunately a lot of Nea Moni's glory has been destroyed by the Turks in 1822 and by the earthquake of 1881. The monastery is now under restoration.
