CRETE SIGHTSEEING:
The Samaria Gorge:
43 km from the city of Chania, this is the longest gorge in Europe, measuring some 18 kilometres and well known for its awesome beauty.
At some points the passage is just 3 meters wide and at times the steep sides rise to a height of 600 meters. A stream that flows between the highest peak of the White Mountains and the mountain of Volikas cuts the gorge.
Chora Sfakion:
74 km. south of Chania, an unusual village built in a rocky, barren area, difficult to reach whether by sea or overland. To get there one crosses the Askifou Mountains and the Nimbros gorge.
Gavdos:
An islet 24 nautical miles south of Sfakia (Chora Sfakion). There are scheduled boats from Sfakia to this virgin isle, which its spotless beaches and its cedar trees all year long (whether permitting).
Lake Kournas:
48 km. east of Chania. A picturesque lake, the only one on the island. The mountains surrounding it are reflected in its calm waters. There are taverns in the area for a bite to eat.
Argiroupoli:
27 km. Southwest of Rethimnon. A village nested among greenery, build on a knoll not far away from springs that feed some enormous cisterns. Lower down the springs push waterfalls that make small cataracts in which the fluffy Greek flokates (rugs) are washed.
Fragokastelo:
About 11 km. east of the Chora Sfakion, is the site of the old "Castel Franco" (Franchise Castle), built by the Venetians in 1371 as a defence against pirates and Cretan rebels.
Elafonissos:
In the southwest part of Crete (Prefecture of Chania) lies one of the most beautiful beaches you could visit in Crete.
The beautiful islet of Elafonisi, which is joined to the body of Crete by a shallow reef some 800 metres long. This is easy to cross when the weather is calm.
Elounda's Lagoon of Mermaid:
One of the favorite spots on Crete is the town of Elounda (or Elouda), located in northeastern Crete in the Lasithi prefecture. This modern town lies on the shores of a lagoon that contains the sunken remains of the lost city of Olos. On days when the water is calm, the walls of this ancient city can be seen beneath the waves.
Elounda's lagoon, technically the Gulf of Korthos, also contains the island of Spinalonga and its Venetian fortress, which for many years was used as a leper colony.
Despite Elounda's difficult history of sunken cities and suffering lepers, the waters of the lagoon are strangely calming and peaceful.
Lively Lassithi:
The Lassithi region of Eastern Crete offers expansive vistas with fields stretching out to the horizon, whirling windmills, charming small ports, and the ruins of a Minoan palace appearing unexpectedly around a bend in the road. Eastern Crete is also the southernmost part of Europe, marking the major land boundary between that continent and Africa and the middle East.
A great base for your Lassithian adventures is Sitia (Siteνa), an atmospheric town occupying a location that dates back to the Minoan period.
Many of the finds from the nearby Zakros Palace have gone to the Archaeological Museum in Iraklio, but changes in policy on how artefacts are divided up have resulted in many being displayed locally, at the Archaeological Museum of Sitia.
Getting Around Lassithi
If you don't feel financially or emotionally up to renting a car, most buses in Crete are inexpensive alternatives, quick enough for short journeys, often hugging scenic coastal roads where most of the population is centred.
If you do want to drive, Crete is a large, roughly eagle-shaped island. In the interior of Crete, even the National Highway often takes meandering paths, clinging to crests for a time, then plunging into valleys or shooting straight across the plains
Sitia has a small airport linked to several islands, and Agios Nikolaos provides ferry service to and from Piraeus.
DIKTEON ANDRON:
On the northern slopes of the Dikti mountain range, at an altitude of 1025 meters, lays the famous Psichro Cave, also known as Dikteon Andron. It is a very ancient site of worship, amongst the most important and interesting sites in Crete. One is lead there by a stone path uphill, which runs through dense forest, consisting of oaks (guercus perbescens), Cretan maple - trees (acer creticum), holm - oaks (quercus coccifera) and a large variety of bushes, creating a large, green oasis in an otherwise wild, rocky environment.
The cave consists of two parts: Ano Spileo (the Upper Cave) mostly resembling a rocky cavern without stalagmite ornamentation, and Kato Spileo (the Lower Cave) which is divided into five small and larger chambers.
From the initiation of the research, Psichro Cave has been identified as being Dikteon Andron which, according to ancient tradition, is the cave where Rea escaped to give birth to Zeus, the Father of Gods and Men, Safe from the infanticide intentions of Saturn. The she - goat Amalthea, who was a Nymph according to legend, nursed Zeus, while the Kourites* hid the infant's crying with the clanging sounds of their weapons and wild dancing. According to other myths, bees, doves or a she - pig, nursed the god. Another tradition goes that Dikteon Andron was the place to where Zeus carried Europe, after he had kidnapped her from Phoenicia. It is also said to be where Epimenides, the famous augur of the archaic era is supposed to have "slept" for many years, and had his visions.
The finds, which were accidentally discovered in the caves, are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and in the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford.
Asterousia Mountains:
Asterousia Range consists of various low mountains and hills, spreading from Cape Lithino to Ierapetra. The higher mountain is Mt Kofinas (1280 m). The existence of this range makes approach to the southern coast of Iraclion kind of an adventure; driving is very tiring as roads are narrow, full of looping curves, climbing up steep mountain flanks. Many of these roads are just dirt tracks. However this also has a positive effect; most of this coast is still a virgin place without the results of over-development that exists in the resorts of the northern coast.
Matala:
Matala was the ancient port of Phaistos and Gortys and a former fishing community, which has developed into a modern holiday centre. It is located 4 km southwest of the village of Pitsidia and 75 km from Iraklion. It is built on the coastline of the Messier bay inside a small and picturesque inlet.
The turquoise blue sea, and the red disk of the sun, which sets in the evening horizon, creates a hue of colours that evoke novel emotions.
History:
Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period, following the destruction of Kommos, and the port of Gortys during the Roman period when the Romans proclaimed Gortys capital of Crete.
Ruins of the ancient city are still visible on the seabed as the ancient city was sunk in the sea. The archaeological pick has unearthed some traces of the palaces built by the nobles from the ancient cities of Phaistos and Gortys.
There is also a cave known as "Brutospeliana" and legend has it that the Roman general Brutus frequented it.
Owing to its exceptional natural beauty, Matala became the meeting place of the "Flower Children" in 1968.
The Monastery of ARKADI, Rethymnon:
Due to the holocaust it suffered in 1866, this has become the island's most famous monastery. It lies on a low plateau 23 kilometres from the town of Rethymno.
Built during the last Venetian period, it consists of a large set of fortress-like buildings. The main building included the cells, the warehouses where the agricultural products were treated and stored, the stables.
The elaborate central entrance was restored just four years after the 1866 explosion. It leads to the interior court, through a vaulted passage. In the middle of the court, stands the impressive church, with its two naves dedicated to Saint Constantine and Saint Helen, and to Our Lord.
Completed in 1587, it clearly shows the different currents in the development of Cretan art during the 16th and 17th centuries.
In the southwest corner of the church, one can still see a section of the burnt iconostasis that survived the 1866 holocaust.
The church is surrounded by a large and roomy precinct and the vaulted passages with their row of arches have retained their grandeur.
Already in the 16th century the monastery played an important role in the cultural life of Crete. There were many copyist monks, a rich library and a school.
The Turkish invasion reduced its cultural activities for a while, but the Arkadi Monastery was able to recover promptly and received a unique privilege among Greek monasteries: the Turks allowed the ringing of its bells.
The monastery proved to be not only a remarkable cultural centre, but also played an all-important role in the fight against the Turks: when the Turkish Army (15,000 men) surrounded the monastery in November 1866, 300 fighting men and 600 hundred women and children had taken refuge in it.
When the walls came tumbling down and the Turks began the massacre, one of the rebels, Kostis Giambourakis, blew up the powder magazine and the sky-high explosion reduced the monastery to a pile of rubble. This heroic feat is considered one of the greatest in Cretan history and has turned the Arkadi Monastery into one of Europe's Monuments to Freedom. There's a museum in the monastery with many impressive relics of the 1866 Holocaust and some beautiful icons.
