Directions
The island of Spetses is located at the entrance of the Saronic Gulf very near the mainland of Peloponese. It is accessible by ferry or hydrofoil from Piraeus port (approx. 2 hrs) or by car from the Peloponese (distance from Athens to Costa 180 km.) and then by sea taxi 5 min.

Attractions
The island presents many traditional and historical architectural moments.
It is a place of rich history.

First proof of human residence at the 3rd millennium is pottery of this era which has been excavated in the area of Aghia Marina.
The Bronze Age shipwreck of “Dokos”, considered to be the oldest known shipwreck in the world, is placed in 2000 BC. Findings of this are being restored in the museum in Spetses.
Various invasions and settlements followed.
The Mycenaeans’ findings of the Mycenaean shipwreck of “Iria” at about 1200BC are exhibited at the Museums in Spetses. Furthermore, there is a Byzantine settlement in Zogeria and basilica churches in the area of Baltiza. The Venetians and the Turks followed.
The 18th century marks the beginning of the island’s economical peak up to the revolution of 1821 against the Turkish occupation. It was during this era that the already flourishing fleet of Spetses contributed to the great cause under the command of the heroin Laskarina Bouboulina who devoted her ships and wealth for the liberty of the country.
The Spetsiot fleet cut off Turkish supplies and did considerable damage to the Turkish fleet. Bouboulina’s house as well as the house of hero Hatzigiannis Mexis are today turned into museums of local history. It is in honor of all these brave people and of the heroic naval battles that every year at the first fortnight of September the re-enactment of the burning of the Turkish flagship takes place among fireworks, dances and festivities.

Deriving from such a historic background the town of the island is a conglomerate of the past and the present in a unique mixture of tradition and contemporary life.

History of the building:
In 1921 Dimitrios Daskalakis built a textile and spinning factory, the facade of which still exists today. During the years that passed since then the “factory” had the following uses:
- Textile factory which stopped working after WWII. In front of the factory, there used to be a pier (one can still see the ruins of it), which was used to ship in the cotton bales. The cotton was then turned into thread.
- Power plant, producing electricity (DC), which was distributed to the houses of the island, lasted till 1950, when the National Electricity Company took over.
- Ice producing factory. The ice was mainly used to freeze the fish sent to the Piraeus fish market, lasted till 1960.
In 1989, the destroyed and deserted building was bought by the Greek ship owner Andreas Kyrtatas from Andros island. The “factory” gave its place to the “Nissia” traditional residences, which today is one of the loveliest holiday family resorts not only of Spetses but of Greece as well.
Nissia, which in Greek means islands, took its name from the fact that each residence has the name of a Greek island. Nissia is not only characterized by the existence of the superbly restored original façade (which since 1985 has been declared by law as a preserved monument of the industrial architectural heritage of Greece by the late Melina Merkouri), but also for the high quality of services it offers to our guests.
