The beach of Koukounaries, one of the most famous beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, is situated at the southwestern coast of the island, at a distance of 13 kilometers southwestern to the town of Skiathos. Many visitors and several maps refer to this beach as “Chryssi Akti” (the “golden coast” in Greek), after the fine, sparkling golden sand. But it is the impressive and interesting wood of umbrella pines, almost watered by the waves, that gave the name to this excellent beach (“koukounaria” is the Greek word for the umbrella pine).

The rapidly developing settlement around the beach offers many alternatives for accommodation and eating.
