Kaki Thalassa beach, Attica |
The beach of Kaki Thalassa (the words mean “the bad sea” in Greek) is situated in front of the homonymous settlement, at a distance of less than 50 kilometers from the center of Athens to the South, and 8-9 kilometers eastern to the town of Keratea, to which the area belongs. It is a beach of medium size, divided in two parts by a small rocky peninsula with the small church of Agios Panteleimon. Both parts are sandy with fine pebbles at parts. The beach owes its name to the fact that it is open to the North and the northern winds raise high waves which make swimming almost impossible and a bit dangerous. At the southern end of the beach there are two machine-gun nests, constructed of concrete by the Germans during the World War II. |

The southern part of the beach is sufficiently organized with facilities for swimming and sunbathing (umbrellas, sun beds, showers and cabanas). The northern end is not organized at all. As the beach is open to the North, it is totally unprotected by the northern winds and swimming is impossible. The beach attracts many people, especially during the weekends, when it receives both the locals and the residents of Athens who have their summer houses in the area. The beach has also two or three fish taverns at the sea front, which offer fresh fish and sea food, as well as coffee and refreshments. These taverns are very popular, especially in the evening, when a lot of people come here to enjoy their dinner by the sea. There is also an open-air cinema playing good films, as well as a couple of coffee bars and music bars. |

In case of health problems you should address to the pharmacies of Keratea, or to the local Medical Centers of Kalyvia (some 13 kilometers southwestern to the beach) or of Markopoulo (some 20 kilometers also to the Southwest). A Police Station and a Traffic Police station are available in Keratea. Access to the beach is pretty easy by the local public buses departing from Keratea, as well as by rented or private car and motorbikes. In general you will not have a problem with parking, as two municipal open air parking are available at the beach. |
