Vromopousi beach, Attica

The beach of Vromopousi is situated in front of the homonymous settlement, some 53 kilometers southeastern to the center of Athens and 12 kilometers eastern to the town of Keratea to which it belongs. It is a sandy beach of medium size, not organized but very clean. Its name is a combination of Greek and Albanian words and it means “the dirty well”. Officially, however, it is often called Kalopigado, (meaning “the good well”) by euphemism.

When there are northern winds, only the right part of the beach is affected, whereas the left one is pretty well protected. The swimmers will find a sea front tavern for meals and a cantina for snacks, refreshments and water. The beach gets crowded in the weekends as, apart from the summer residents, it receives many visitors who may come quickly from Athens, via Attiki Odos. In the weekdays it is usually quieter. Depending on the hour of the day some tamarisk trees and the rocks at the right end of the beach offer some shadow to the swimmers.

The beach has a nice view of the sea and of the uninhabited island of Makronissos (the word means “the long island” in Greek) across, an wild island well known from Greek history, since it was there that were sent to exile the political opponents of the government during the last years of the civil war (1946-1949) and some years after. The landscape at the beach is ideal for taking photos, especially early in the evening when you may see the moon rising from the sea and from Makronissos. Moreover, if you look around, the environment will give you the impression that you are not at a beach of Attica, but on an island of Cyclades.

In case of health problems the pharmacies of Keratea, or the local Medical Centers of Kalyvia (some 16 kilometers southwestern to the beach) or of Markopoulo (some 26 kilometers also to the Southwest) are available for you. In Keratea you will also find a Police Station and a Traffic Police station.

Access to the beach is possible by rented or private car and motorbikes. During the weekends you may have some problem to find a parking very close to the beach. A marina for small boats and yachts is available at the left end of the beach, which is protected from the northern winds.
